UPF stands for Ultraviolet Protection Factor, a rating that is assigned to fabrics that measures how effectively they block the sun's broad-spectrum rays before they reach your skin. It’s similar to SPF, which is a rating that is assigned to sunscreen. Every fabric has a UPF rating, whether it is listed or not. The average white t-shirt has a UPF rating of just 3. Shade’s unique products, however, are rated UPF 40+, offering superior protection.

What is UPF?

Shade pioneered the first 100% cotton fabric with sun protection. Our proprietary formula has been verified UPF 40+ by the AATCC’s TM183 Standards.

Through our research, we found most sun protective clothing contains some form of polyester or plastic, which is not only harmful to the environment, but not breathable for your skin. That’s why our founder invented CottonUPF™ — a fabric that offers breathable, natural-fiber sun protection. At Shade, we are committed to providing sustainable, comfortable and effective sun protection without compromising quality.
